Dictionary

A dictionary conveys knowledge about language and serves as a reference work for linguistic information such as spelling, pronunciation, grammar, meaning, equivalents in a foreign language, etc. A lexicon, on the other hand, contains factual and world knowledge such as the origin, production and use of an object. An encyclopedia like Wikipedia is even more comprehensive. However, 'lexicon' and 'encyclopedia' are often used synonymously. A dictionary can be described and subdivided more precisely on the basis of the information presented, the intended purpose and the target user group. In addition, a distinction is made according to the medium. Dictionaries are available as: print media, electronic resource or Online Tools. General dictionaries contain comprehensive information on the general vocabulary of the contemporary language. Accordingly, special dictionaries are dictionaries that only contain specific information, are intended for a specific purpose, or are aimed at a specific user group. If we are looking for technical vocabulary , we can only get so far with general dictionaries, even if some technical terms do occur in everyday language. The word 'tire abrasion' can also be found in the dictionary. The learner's dictionary lists details that would be superfluous for native speakers. As the name suggests, this is a suitable reference book for learning foreign languages. For English, the monolingual Oxford Learner's Dictionary is a veritable gold mine. Here I not only get the pronunciation in British and American English spoken, but also all meanings with synonyms, context, examples, the correct connection of objects/verbs ("Does the verb come after the to or not?"), collocations and much more. Picture dictionaries as a combination of words and pictures are recommended not only for children, but for everyone who likes to learn visually. Multilingual labels are often shown next to an image. For example, the picture dictionary for metal technology in German, English and other languages is an interesting alternative to memorizing vocabulary lists by heart. In addition, through the picture one not only learns the word, but also links it to the object that the word describes.

English

English is the official language in many countries. And don't forget that more than 50% of all websites are written in English. If you look at the educational system with its numerous specialist literature, then far more than the scientific specialist literature is written in English. English is the most important and therefore the most widespread language on earth. English is one of the world languages. It is therefore always worthwhile to learn English or, in the case of an international company, to have the homepage and company brochures professionally translated into English. English is spoken as a second language in many countries around the world. It is currently estimated that more than 250 million people actively speak English as a second language. English is the business language all over the world, and this is not likely to change in the coming decades. The areas of the world where English is spoken as a first or second language are called "Terranglia", whereby English is meant and those who speak American English are excluded. This distinction comes from the linguistics, because they not only deal with the language itself, but also with the cultural differences, the regional characteristics and the intercultural communication of English studies itself. Every person in the world who can speak speaks at least one language, their mother tongue. A second language is a communication option that can be practiced verbally and offers several communicative interaction options. However, many children grow up speaking two different languages. Bilingual education is used intentionally and consciously in many families today in order to offer the children more knowledge. Here in Germany, children learn at least one second language. It's mostly English. Only a few ministries of education are in the process of making French compulsory as the first foreign language in the French border area, or have already changed the curricula to this effect, simply so that students in these areas have better career opportunities.
